Pet Sitters International

2002 Quest for Excellence Convention

Nashville, TN!

September 19-21st.

Once again I will be attending the PSI annual convention. This year it will be held in Music City Nashville, TN! I will be refreshing my certification in Pet CPR and First Aid and taking numerous courses on specialized pet care in the home. I am enrolled in an intensive course with Brian Kilcommons this year on dog behavior. Mr. Kilcommons is a world-renowned animal behaviorist, and I am very excited about this in-depth workshop!

I’ve also been asked to speak at the convention this year on exotic pet care!  Because of my background in zoology, working at the San Antonio Zoo and the many exotics we care for on a regular basis, I was chosen to give a presentation to pet sitters from around the country on this topic! As you might guess, I am very excited about this opportunity!

This year the whole family will be attending! Phillip, Collin and Ryan will be going with me as well as our newest Vaughan addition arriving in August!  This time "It's a Girl!"

Help! My Cat Stopped Using the Litter Box!

According to some sources, one of the most noted reasons that cats are given up by their owners is failure to use their litter box. I know that just the small number of cat owners that I see as clients mention this problem often. It’s usually quite perplexing since the cat had previously been using the litter box without any problems, and then one day, seemingly out of the blue, "Kitty" decides to stop using the box and start using the corner of a room instead. This of course is an unacceptable behavior!

At the Pet Sitters International convention last September, I attended a seminar focusing solely on cat issues, cat pet sitting and cat behaviors. This topic was one that we discussed. According to the presenter there are some very specific reasons cats stop using their litter pans.

The very first thing you need to do for a cat that has stopped using her litter pan is take her to the veterinarian. The vet can run a series of urine and blood tests to see if there are any medical reasons, such as urinary tract infections, kidney problems, or even diabetes that are causing the changes in her behavior. When you and your cat’s doctor have ruled out all medical possibilities, you will then want to take a look at some other possibilities related to psychological and behavioral "issues" that might be leading to the problems.

If you look at cats in the wild some important aspects of their behavior come into play. Cats do not eat in the same place that they urinate and defecate. I’ve often seen cat owners place food directly next to the litter pan. This is asking the cat to go against his natural instincts to separate the two functions. Some cats will comply with this for a lifetime, some for a finite amount of time, and some for very minimal time.

#1 – Don’t put your cat’s feeding area in the same location as his litter pan!

Secondly, cats feel very vulnerable when they are eliminating – even the pampered house kitty! Most cat owners have gone to using fully covered litter pans in hopes of minimizing odors. When the cat is inside this type of box, he feels extraordinarily vulnerable because there is only one escape route – the opening where the "attacker" or threatening agent would be face to face with him. He also cannot see any approaching dangers because the only view he has out of the box is the small entry hole. If the cat has an actual encounter with a threatening occurrence, or even just senses that he is too vulnerable in this circumstance, he will stop using his pan. Again, this could "just happen" one day out of the blue. The best way to avoid this is to provide your cat with an open litter pan and maintain the cleanliness on a regular basis to avoid odors. If the sight of the litter is too unsightly, the next best option is to provide a privacy screen in front of the box. Finally, if neither of these options will work for your family, you should, at a minimum, cut "peep" holes in each side of the box cover at the cats eye level so he can see his surroundings while eliminating.

#2 – Don’t completely enclose your cat’s box making him feel vulnerable.

Keeping with the same thought, any environmental occurrence that startles or scares the cat while he is eliminating is likely to cause him to dislike using the litter pan. One thing I see often is a litter pan right next to washing machines and dryers. If kitty is quietly using the pan and the washer kicks into the spin cycle suddenly or the dryer buzzer goes off, he might pair this unpleasant experience with the litter pan and can cause him to find a "better" place to eliminate.

#3 – Locate the pan in a quiet area free from sudden noises

Next let’s look at litter! This is tricky. Some cats will "decide" that they no longer like the size, smell, texture, or some other feature of their litter. This might happen even if you’ve been using the same litter for years. Manufacturers of cat litter won’t often change anything of significance with their litter, without labeling it differently because they know most cats don’t like changes in their litter. However, sometimes cats sense a slight difference or, for no apparent reason at all, they just "decide" they no longer "like" their litter. In this instance it’s a game of trial and error. Try different litter types, substrate sizes and material types. There are litters made from a wide variety of materials now. You can purchase clay litters, silicone, sand, pine, and even recycled newspaper along with many others! Usually most cats who are having an "issue" with litter will prefer an unscented, non-clumping, simple clay litter – the old fashioned kind! There is a product out now called "Cat Attract" that is a specially formulated litter enhanced with herbs made to attract the picky feline. While I haven’t tried it, the testimonials are very good. You can find it at most pet retailers. On the other hand, if your kitty has been doing fine with the litter pan until you recently purchased that new type of litter your neighbor suggested a couple of months ago, then your trial and error might be short! Go back to the old litter you had before!

#4 – Consider litter type.

Finally let’s consider numbers. If you have one cat, you should have no less than 2 boxes! Always have at least one more box than you have cats. It’s best to provide a couple of extras. You might think that this will make way too much work in cleaning and maintaining boxes, but really it won’t. Kitty will still eliminate the same amount and once around the house with scooper and bags a couple of times per day will keep the boxes clean and kitty odor to a minimum. You should also consider having additional boxes in varying areas of the house. If you have frequent house-guests, provide a box for kitty where they don’t have to pass guests. If you have a two story home, provide a box upstairs and downstairs.

#5 – Remember number of cats (+) one box, and location of boxes!

In conclusion, there are many cat owners that will never experience litter pan problems with their cat, even if they "break all the rules." But there are also a great number of owners that will experience the frustration that comes with a cat that stops using the box for no apparent reason. If you’re one of these owners, don’t give up hope. It might take some time and investigation, but in most instances you can figure out the root of the problem. If you are experiencing these problems and don’t know where to turn or what to do, you can always call me and I would be happy to help you.

Upcoming Events!

Let’s Get Out and Go WITH the Pets!

Delta Society Pooch Parade   Saturday April 27th!

Join me for a FUN morning with the dogs and participate in an official Fiesta Event too! The Delta Society is an organization devoted to promoting the wonderful companions dogs can be by visiting the ill and elderly at area hospitals and nursing homes.

Besides benefiting such a wonderful organization, this is really a fun event! It’s about a 2-3 mile walk through beautiful Alamo Heights with treat and water breaks all along the way! I usually take a wagon to pull Fritzi (my dachshund) after about the first mile. Her short, little legs just don’t want to go more than that. You don’t have to complete the entire course either.

It’s just a casual stroll and so much fun! Quite often there are additional events such as a pet costume contests, owner/dog look-alike contests and other fun things to see and participate in. Did I mention, this is an official Fiesta Event!?!?

Registration for the event begins at 8:00am at the Alamo Heights Swimming Pool – 250 Viesca Street. The walk begins at 9:00am. Fees are $15/individual or $25 for a family plus you get a t-shirt!

I would LOVE for you to join me and we can all walk together! If you can make this one, call me and we will meet just prior to the walk. You will get a $5 CCC coupon for walking with me, and I will have a special gift for your doggie too!

Take Your Dog to Work Day June 21st

Once again Pet Sitters International is sponsoring this fun and unique event, and Cathy’s Critter Care will be promoting it! It’s only a success if you help us make it so! We need you to bring it up at your office! You’d be surprised how open bosses are to the idea. Sometimes what you think might be a workplace unfriendly to bringing dogs to work, just might surprise you when you explain what TYDTWD is really all about. The focus of this day is to bring attention to the wonderful pets well-trained, well-mannered dogs make, and to encourage their adoption from local animal shelters and rescue groups! It’s pretty darn fun to show off those adorable doggie eyes too! Help us help the dogs in shelters by promoting this day at your office.

I can provide you with materials presenting TYDTWD so that the bosses can decide if this is something they can support for just one day or even ½ a day.

To encourage your participation in this event, I am offering our Pet Taxi services for just $5 each way throughout San Antonio and the NE areas! I can bring your fur-kid to work for the morning, the afternoon, or just for lunch!

Please let me know if you will be participating at your office, if you need informative materials to "secretly" leave around the office to convince the boss, or if you need pet taxi service. If we get a good response this year, the media is going to cover it!

Thank you for always letting people know about the great services and care you receive from CCC.

Now check out our summer referral program!

Get 15% off your next services from Cathy’s Critter Care for referring a friend that uses our services for the first time! They just have to let us know they heard about CCC from YOU and YOU will get the credit!

Offer good through September 30 2002!

Tax Time is Here!

Okay, well by now, it’s past tax day! But we all just completed ours so I thought, just for fun, I would give you a breakdown of where your pet sitting money goes!

For every $10 take away $3 for the IRS (self employment taxes)! Take of $0.30 for insurance and bonding expenses, $1.80 for paperwork, supplies and welcome home treats. Finally, our average client lives 7.5 miles from our home offices. That’s 15 miles roundtrip. Figuring the average vehicle gets 20 miles per gallon (most get less in city driving), each visit roundtrip uses ¾ gallon of gas. If gas is estimated at $1 per gallon, that’s $0.75 in gas expenses. WHEW! There, now…the grand total…for every $10 you pay, your pet sitter actually makes $4.15!

Animal Essentials
On Sale

Essential Fatty Acid Supplements 30% off in April and May! 2 Bottles of 90 capsules each for $30 total! 180 Capsules of Omega 3 and Omega 6 EFA’s for you and your pet! Helps with skin conditions, joint problems and other systemic difficulties

Where are You All Day Long?

I know it is very hard getting in touch with me at the office! I am usually out taking care of pets and for safety reasons, I don’t generally forward my calls to the cell phone. However, I do check messages almost every hour throughout the day. I apologize that you most often have to speak to my voice mail. Someday, I’ll get that problem solved too. However, when you leave a message, please always leave your phone number where you can be reached! Often I have to return calls from the cell phone and am out of the office, away from caller ID and your paperwork. I don’t quite have everyone’s numbers memorized yet J So, please, always leave a number with your message! Thanks!

Please Note:

There is a new policy for key pick up and delivery. We will offer one free pickup and delivery of keys. If you require that your key be returned to you after each service, there will be a charge to cover time and expenses involved. We offer our clients a safe and secure "key holding" program by keeping our pet sitting keys in our office. For those of you already using that service, there will be no changes.

By Popular Demand

Because we’ve had so many requests for longer visits, we’ve taken your suggestions and incorporated them into a new price/visit plan. 30-minute visits are still priced the same. You can purchase additional time in 15-minute increments for $4 per 15 minutes! So, now you can have 45 minute or even 60 minute visits if your pets require that care!

We are updating our client reference sheets!

If you do not wish to be used as a reference, please let us know! We give references to new clients looking for a good pet sitting service. We only mail the reference sheet after we’ve received the requesting individual’s complete information. Your name and phone number are given, but not your address! We do not under any circumstances, post the information on the internet! It is kept confidential for our new clients only.

Isn’t this something your pet sitter should know?
